  • The Boys from Brazil (1978) I’ve always heard about this one, but never seen it. Gregory Peck, Laurence Olivier, and James Mason seems pretty impressive.
  • Elvis ’56 (1987) A documentary about Elvis Presley in 1956, the year of his big breakout. Levon Helm from The Band narrates.
  • Red Scorpion (1989) Never even heard of this film. The end of the ’80s action movies. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen a Dolph Lundgren movie. Has M. Emmet Walsh, so there’s a plus.
  • She’s Having a Baby (1988) A classic, but of course, it’s a John Hughes movie. Moving away from the teen set to more adult concerns, this is a very moving picture.
  • Morituri (1965) Don’t know where the title comes from, I first thought it was an Italian horror movie. But it’s a WWII thriller starring Marlon Brando, Yul Brenner, and Trevor Howard. What’s a British war movie without Trevor Howard?
  • The House on Telegraph Hill (1951) Robert Wise (The Sound of Music) directs this early B-picture.
  • The 300 Spartans (1962) You see 300? Want to see a low-tech version? Here you go.
  • Crazy People (1990) I think I must have been under a rock in ’89-’90 because I haven’t heard of this one either.
  • Policewomen (1974) Looks like exploitation, acts like exploitation, it must be exploitation. Though I really like this line in the description: “…though the smugglers may look like harmless, bikini-clad mavens on the outside, they’re tough as nails on the inside.”
  • Doctor Detroit (1983) Not much of a Dan Akroyd fan myself.
  • Move Over, Darling (1963) Doris Day and James Garner with appearances by Don Knotts and the underrated Thelma Ritter.
  • Do Not Disturb (1965) Doris Day again.
  • Sesame Street: Classics Includes Bill Cosby, Lena Horne and Johnny Cash!
  • William Shatner’s Get a Life! (2012) This one obviously isn’t old, but it’s of interest to retro fans, especially Star Trek fans.
  • The Beat Hotel (2012) Of interest to those who follow The Beatniks and Beat Culture.
  • Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr. Leonard Cohen (1965) Many people seem pretty awed by Cohen. Most of his songs sound pretty much the same to me.

  1. This is an interesting feature. I always check out what movies are new to DVD, but not streaming. I can offer some tips of a few of these.

The Boys from Brazil. I’ve actually read the book, but not seen the movie. It’s about a plot to clone Hitler. It was a decent thriller.

Red Scorpion is your basic 80’s action B movie.

She’s Having a Baby is fun.

Crazy People has some good humor in it, even if it is politically incorrect. People who are in a mental institution come up with ideas for product advertising. The fun is that somehow the movie makers got companies to let them use real products – “Volvo – our cars look like a box, but they will keep you alive.”

Doctor Detroit isn’t that great. I’ve never seen a reason to watch it a second time.
