Greensburg, KS and the World’s Largest Hand-Dug Well 1950s

Ephemera, Prints and Lithography
Greensburg Well (1) (Large)

If you’ve driven through Kansas you’ve seen the signs for the World’s Largest Hand-Dug Well. And it’s huge. And it’s dug by hand, not drilled or machine dug. We are hardy folk in Kansas and we like our water. While there, you get to see the Pallasite Meteorite, which conveniently rhymes.

  1. When I was a kid, there was a guy who drilled wells with this auger type contraption that was hitched to a mule. The mule would walk in a circle which caused the auger to twist into the ground. 35 ft. was considered a deep well back then. Now folks nearby have to go 500 ft. for water. I don’t know if the water table has sunk or well drillers have boat payments to make 😉
