New Netflix Instant for September 14, 2011

New this week on Netflix Instant viewing. Not a lot of retro movies, but pretty good action movies.

  • Coogan’s Bluff (1968) – Never seen it. Clint Eastwood again this week. This was the first of his detective phase after moving out of the cowboy phase. Action director Don Siegel (Dirty Harry, The Shootist) helms this one.
  • Tom Horn (1980) – Saw this when I was about 13 and all I remember is Steve McQueen blows a guys head in half with a shotgun. By far the most graphic violence I’d seen at the time. This was McQueen’s next to last movie.
  • The Last Hard Men (1976) – Never seen it. Charlton Heston, James Coburn, Barbara Hershey, and Jorge Rivero. How bad could it be? Directed by Andrew V. McLaglen, a workman-like director who specialized in Westerns and war movies. I’m currently reading Stuntman!: My Car-Crashing, Plane-Jumping, Bone-Breaking, Death-Defying Hollywood Lifeby Hal Needham (stuntman and director of Smokey and the Bandit) and he worked quite a bit with McLaglen. Not available on DVD! Is onAmazon Instantfor $2.99.
  • The Street Fighter (1974) – Never seen it. Stars Martial arts legend Sonny Chiba. That’s all I know.
